I picked the cream of the crop from the new releases last month. You’ll find that both familiar voices and fresh faces made my list.

Best All-Around

This month’s top honor goes to newcomer, Shamir Bailey. He burst on the alternative dance scene with the popular 2014 single, “On The Regular.” He’s from Las Vegas, and his home city makes a cameo on the album. The album is a blast with lyrics like, “Why not go out and make a scene?” and “He’s a hot mess.” Do yourself a favor and listen to the album from cover to cover.

(2nd Best) Best Alternative Dance

Alternative dance veterans, Hot Chip, return with more electronic and indie pop melding. They pull from several decades to accomplish the retro-ism that is so popular right now. Hold on to your hats for a tour of the late 20th century. 70’s disco funk, 80’s New Wave, and 90’s R&B all represent.

Why Make SenseHot Chip – Why Make Sense?

Best Alternative Country

MMJ, fronted by sateen-vocalist Jim James, returns with a fan-base pleaser of rock and twangy alternative country. The album’s best cuts swing from rockers to plaintive 1970’s style singer-songwriter fare. I’ve cut out the rambling/meandering tracks that hold this album back to reveal a very enjoyable session.

The WaterfallMy Morning Jacket – The Waterfall

  • Genre – Indie Rock, Alternative Country
  • From – Kentucky
  • Fav Tracks – Big Decisions, Spring (Among The Living, Compound Fracture, Believe (Nobody Knows), In Its Infancy (The Waterfall)
  • Recommended Tracks – Believe (Nobody Knows), Compound Fracture, In Its Infancy (The Waterfall), Get The Point, Spring (Among The Living), Big Decisions
  • Singles – Big Decisions, Spring (Among The Living)

Django Django stands out for its sun-washed surf rock feel. This album has a handful of notable tracks, and I’ve pick the good ones to save you some time.

Best Under the Radar

Grasscut was formed when TV/film composer Andrew Phillips (writer, producer, vocals, guitar) and multi-instrumentalist (piano, bass) Marcus O’Dair joined forces in 2010. Everyone Was a Bird is their third LP. Expect a wide, sweeping sound when you hit play on this one.
