Alabama Shakes

Artist Highlight

Alabama Shakes burst on the scene in 2012 with their debut album, Boys & Girls. They had a handful of late night television performances (Conan, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel) that year. For me personally, they were a Newport Folk Festival find in the summer of ’12. They also had a spot on the soundtrack for the Oscar nominated film, Silver Linings Playbook. The group consists of Brittany Howard (lead vocals, guitar), Zac Cockrell (bass), Heath Fogg (guitar), and Steve Johnson (drums). The bandmates are indeed from Alabama, and Brittany and Zac were high school buds in Athens. They’ve had an exhaustive three years touring which has included two SNL appearances, rounds on the festival circuit, and even a White House performance. The harnessed raw talent here is fully interpreted through a historical context which lends it a sophistication. The sophomore album especially shows layers of complexity, and both albums provide hours of listening enjoyment.
