1. Chvrches – The Bones of What You Believe

  • Genre: Electronic, Synth Pop
  • Fav Tracks: The Mother We Share, Recover, Gun, We Sink
  • From: Glasgow, Scotland

Lauren Mayberry uses her girlish voice to sing lyrics with teeth. With Iain Cook and Martin Doherty completing the trio, Chvrches presents music that has been likened to Depeche Mode, Prince and Two Door Cinema Club.

2. Disclosure –  Settle

  • Genre: Electronic, Dance, House, 2-Step UK Garage
  • Fav Tracks: When A Fire Starts To Burn, Latch, White Noise, Stimulation
  • From: Surrey, England

Guy and Howard Lawrence are brothers that meld several dance music styles including house, 2-step UK garage, and dub step with interesting guest vocalists. It’s a shuffling, hypnotic mix that will keep you coming back.

3. Rhye – Woman

  • Genre: Electronic, R&B, Downtempo
  • Fav Tracks: The Fall, Open, Verse, Hunger
  • From: Denmark and Canada

Denmark’s Robin Hannibal and Canada’s Mike Milosh teamed up to release a great album this year, Woman. This album sits firmly in the Sade-category with music that wafts through the air like the aroma of cookies in the oven.

4. Janelle Monae – The Electric Lady

  • Genre: Alternative R&B, Soul
  • Fav Tracks: Electric Lady, Q.U.E.E.N., Primetime, Dance Apocalyptic
  • From: Kansas City, KS

The Electric Lady is an eclectic album with R&B, jazz, Latin, dance, funk and soul touches. It includes an impressive who’s who of guest artists (Prince, Erykah Badu, Esperanza Spalding, Solange, Miguel).

5. Blood Orange – Cupid Deluxe

  • Genre: Alternative R&B, Alternative Dance
  • Fav Tracks: Chamakay, You’re Not Good Enough, Always Let U Down, Uncle Ace
  • From: London, England

Blood Orange is the latest work of Devonte Hynes. Hynes is a songwriter, composer and producer that has worked with many well known names such as Solange Knowles, Florence and the Machine, The Chemical Brothers and Sky Ferreira. Check out this great Pitchfork review of Cupid Deluxe.

6. Autre Ne Veut – Anxiety

  • Genre: Alternative R&B
  • Fav Tracks: Play by Play, Counting, Ego Free Sex Free
  • From: New York, NY

Autre Ne Veut (translates to “I think of none other”) is the work of Arthur Ashin.  Anxiety, a very appropriately named album, provides plenty of belt it out vocals with a major dose of vulnerability that keeps it interesting.

7. Daft Punk – Random Access Memories

  • Genre: Electronic, House, Dance
  • Fav Tracks: Give Life Back to Music, Lose Yourself to Dance, Get Lucky
  • From: France

Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter make up the veteran duo, Daft Punk. This latest album has some very catchy hooks and throw back riffs to the 70’s and 80’s.  You’ll find hints of soft rock, disco, and what a Pitchfork reviewer describes as “slightly jazzy robotic soul.”

8. AM & Shawn Lee – La Musique Numerique

  • Genre: Alternative Electronic
  • Fav Tracks: Steppin’ Out, Two Times, All the Love
  • From: London and Los Angeles

AM & Shawn Lee is (as one would guess) a collaboration between two musicians. AM (Anthony Miller) is a singer/songwriter that was raised near New Orleans but now resides in Los Angeles. Shawn Lee is from Wichita, Kansas but now lives in London. Lee is described as a producer and multi-instrumentalist. Here you will find a 70’s AM Pop and 80’s New Wave base with some hints of soft rock, 60’s Brazilian flare and groove/funk/disco.

9. Quadron – Avalanche

  • Genre: Alternative Electronic, Downtempo, Alternative R&B

The vocalist-producer duo of Coco O and Robin Hannibal bring us an irresistible downtempo-R&B blend ready for the discotheque.
